Salmon Arm Nature Bay Society May 9, 2007 Interpretive Centre

Chair Ron Wedman moved adoption of the agenda. Gary H. moved adoption of the minutes from the April meeting, seconded by Tom R. Passed.

In the absence of Mike Saul, Ron announced the cost of the new roll shutters - $2200, and the replacement of video monitors and telescope.

COMMUNICATIONS:

Tom B. sent letters of thanks for selling Mennie prints to Frames by Filiatrault, Heron Framing, and Salmon Arm Stationery.

SUMMER STUDENT GRANT:

Service Canada has approved an $8 per hour grant of 14 weeks duration for a student staff appointment. SABNES will add $4 per hour, hopefully from another grant source. Mike, Gary and Hanne will seek applicants and conduct interviews, so the person selected can start the last week of May.

WEB SITE:

There was general approval of the revised Web page; Tom B. volunteered to find a more accurate description of local flora.

WEB CAMERA:

Technical difficulties continue to interfere with the clarity of the image, suggesting some flaw in the camera itself. There was a general demand for replacement, which Ron will explore with the supplier. Tim and Ed will pursue ideas for an advertising blitz once the situation has stabilized.

JOBS FOR STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS:

Tom B. reminded the board of his unwillingness to supervise the summer student, and the need for someone to do orientation and followup. Dave announced his retirement as recording secretary, and suggested that a call be put out at the June general meeting, which is where he took on the role 3 years ago. Ed Dahl agreed to replace Tom on the Environmental Committee.

SEMI-ANNUAL MEETING:

June 8, Art Gallery, 7:30 p.m. Guest speaker Don Cecile, on shore birds.

NEWSLETTER:

Will be ready for the end of May; various members volunteered to contribute articles on the Web cam, summer student, new gate, etc.

WOODY NIGHTSHADE:

John offered to complete a form requesting a weed control grant.

BUOYS:

Most of the existing buoys survived the winter, but additional bleach bottles are needed to define boundaries for watercraft.

GULL COUNT:

Doug and Tom B. will complete before the GM.

TOURS:

Ted and Hanne led a Probus tour last week; Ed and Ted will do the same for Rotary members this Friday.

TRAILER:

Tom B. received approval to dispose of the donated (and unusable) trailer that has been sitting on his lot.

June 13, 7:30, Interpretive Centre (following the June 8 general meeting).
