MINUTES OF THE MARCH BOARD MEETING:

Salmon Arm Nature Bay Society Sept 5, 2007 Interpretive Centre


PRESENT:

Mike Saul, Ron Wedman, Gary Carder, Gary Lomax, John MacVicar, Tom Brighouse.

 

MINUTES:

June meeting minutes adopted.

 

TREASURER'S REPORT:

When the contract money arrives from the Service Canada we will have excess of five thousand in chequing and the ten thousand remains in long term certificates as the building fund.

Membership Individual and Corporate: a campaign is needed to recruit more memberships with particular need for the larger fees of corporate members.

Ron will arrange for emptying the donation box


INTERPRETIVE CENTRE REPORT - JOHN:

a)Jetstream should be cancelled (Tom has arranged)

b)Security of the centre and all the electronics valuables should be stored for winter; Twin anchors and Prestige security may help.

c)John offered volunteer days provided other volunteers were willing to help. Lights were discussed.

d)John is willing to volunteer his time for birding walks but needs one other volunteer along; next year we should purchase in vests to identify our staff or volunteer naturalists; more posters are needed in town.

e)Tom will look after the recyclable paper.

f)Roger of City staff at 833-3792 needs to know when to switch off water for winter. The osprey site on th e web was a particularly popular feature; the lists of recent bird sightings were also popular; e flora and e fauna were recommended to the Board.

g)It was agreed that contact should be made early with school seniors homes and organizations, and pre-schools early in the spring inviting these groups to programmes at the Centre.

h)The Board thanked John for his work and presented him with card of appreciation.

 

ELIZABETH'S REPORT:

Mike read out Elizabeth’s report

 

GRANTS:

Mike offered to explore getting a lottery grant ( after mid October when he returns from vacation).

 

DATE FOR AGM:

Friday November 16th. Tom will try to get Dick Canning as a speaker.

 

WEB CAMERA

Ron gave an update report. Ed had suggested that the computer should be nearer to the camera site so as to cut down interference. It was also suggested that it may be possible to cut down the wait between pictures by storing and refreshing at a second apart or so.

 

SIGHTING SHEETS

Tom suggested that we need to reformat the two sheets: 1)birds seen from boats and 2)birds seen from the trails. These were given out free in the past but had been lost with the hard drive problem.

 

COMPUTER:

Mike will make a receipt out for the computer donated by Eric from Silicon Gardens.

 

PROJECTS:

John is nearly ready to install on the promenade railing a prototype sign for approval of the district engineer. Ron showed a drawing of the gate which is to be installed using the grant from the Salmon Arm Rotary club.

 

BUOYS:

Briefly discussed. One buoy with sign has disappeared , and another is on its last bit of buoyancy.

 

THANKS:

The board thanked Gary Lomax and his volunteers for taking on the organization of trail clearing. Jim Hoskiss and his wife should be thanked for doing a lot of the work. The board thanked Mike for organizing the extra week’s cover by volunteers after the staff’s time ended. Tom said his weed eater is still available.

 

BIRD TOWERS:

It was reported that the bird tower needs to be cleaned of gull droppings.

 

MEMORIAL REQUEST:

When surveyed during the summer it appeared that the board was not in favour of renaming the Raven Trail but suggested to the family of the deceased that the far corner of Christmas Island could be named Paul Pukas Point with a memorial tablet or cairn or a bird blind.
