Nature Interpreters – Brighouse Nature Centre

SABNES is seeking two enthusiastic Nature Interpreters to join our team at the Brighouse Nature Centre in Salmon Arm for the 2026 summer season. In this role, you will serve as an ambassador for our urban wetlands, helping visitors of all ages connect with the local environment.

The Brighouse Nature Centre is located next to the Marine Peace Park parking lot, beside the concession stand and pubic washrooms. It is a small white building with a blue roof. Operating hours are 10 AM to 4 PM, 7 days per week.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Visitor Services: Assist the public in identifying local birds and plants by sight and sound using tools like telescopes and field guides.

  • Educational Programs: Co-facilitate "Wild Wednesdays," our weekly summer nature program for young children.

  • Community Outreach: Engage with the public at the Salmon Arm wharf to share insights about wetland conservation and local wildlife.

  • Creative Projects: Update social media platforms and develop engaging educational displays for the Nature Centre.

  • Citizen Science: Perform daily walks along the foreshore trail to collect environmental data for wetland management

  • Collaborating with the Shuswap Trail Alliance to monitor use of the foreshore trail, specifically tracking data regarding dogs on the trail.

Work Schedule and Compensation:

The schedule is shared between two student employees with staggered start dates:

  • Lead Position:

    • Start date: June 2, 2026

    • Schedule: 5 days per week

    • Rate: $20.75/hour plus holiday pay

  • Assistant Position:

    • Start date: July 2, 2026

    • Schedule: 3 days per week plus extra days as needed

    • Rate: $20.75/hour

Both Interpreters work together every Wednesday to deliver specialized programming and guided activities for visiting student groups.
